3 Important things to know when buying a used electric vehicle

  1. Average daily mileage
Consider how many miles you're doing on an average day and multiply the number by 2 to avoid range anxiety. Now you’ve got your personal lower limit of the vehicle’s range.
If you often make long road trips, look for an EV with DC charging capability.
Recommendation: Look for an EV with twice as much range as your average daily mileage.
  2. State of the battery
Electric vehicles require less maintenance than gasoline and diesel cars as they have less wearing and tearing parts. However, EVs have a traction battery, which accounts for up to 50% of its cost. In this case, buying a car with a healthy battery is like buying a new car with a great discount.
Recommendation: Get a knowledgeable independent person to assess battery state.
  3. Battery warranty
Electric vehicles usually have two types of warranty: the bumper-to-bumper warranty and the battery warranty.
The first one is the same as with ICE cars and typically covers the vehicle for 3 years or 50,000 miles.
The battery warranty covers exclusively the traction battery of the car and sometimes the drive unit. It has a longer duration, generally 8 years or 100,000 miles.
Recommendation: Before buying an electric vehicle, look up the warranty on the official manufacturer’s website or contact the local dealer.
