About BMW i3

The BMW i3 is a city car, high-roof hatchback manufactured and marketed by BMW with an electric powertrain using rear wheel drive via a single-speed transmission. Its underfloor Li-ion battery pack is offered in two capacities as well as with an optional range-extending gasoline engine. The i3 was BMW's first mass-produced zero emissions vehicle and was launched as part of BMW's electric vehicle sub-brand, BMW i. The i3 debuted as a concept at the 2011 International Motor Show Germany, and production began in July 2013 in Leipzig, Germany.
DESIGN
The BMW i3 was designed from top to bottom with sustainability, exceptional looks, outstanding handling, driving dynamics and battery performance in mind. Constant innovation and the drive to progress means that the BMW i3 and BMW i3s have a common objective: to be class-leading electric vehicles. The BMW i3 strikes a balance of sharp, sporty lines on the exterior and an open and flowing interior.
PERFOMANCE
Full power, right from the start: The BMW eDrive electric drive provides maximum torque instantaneously. So when you take to the road in the new BMW i3 or BMW i3s you’ll experience sustainability at its most dynamic and agile. The accelerator pedal also works as a brake: Taking your foot off the accelerator recovers the kinetic energy and brakes the vehicle. This innovation, called “One-pedal-feeling”, allows you to experience the driving dynamics even more directly. The electric drivetrain BMW eDrive is an in-house development of BMW. Full torque is available from a standing start and, when it’s out on the road, the flow of power keeps coming without delay. This is down to the powerful motor working in combination with a single-stage transmission, which completely does away with the need for gears. Driving in the BMW i3 is also a near-silent and odourless experience, allowing you to relax and enjoy a uniquely new kind of driving pleasure.
EXTERIOR
The six exterior colours of the new BMW i3 and BMW i3s all have one thing in common – their power of expression. The colour spectrum of the two non-metallic as well as the four metallic paints stretches from subdued to expressive and can be freely combined with every interior world. Depending on the choice of exterior colour or interior equipment, the highlight areas on the side skirts and Double Kidney grille come in either BMW i Blue or Frozen Grey metallic. The contrast of Black Belt and the exterior paint provides the vehicle with an extremely innovative look in two colours that emphasise its dynamic qualities. The light alloy wheels in the new BMW i3 and BMW i3s are designed to be especially narrow, in order to reduce air and roll resistance as much as possible. The large tyre diameter of 19" and 20" reinforces the sporty and agile character of the vehicle and contributes to the maximisation of tread contact. Some rims are enclosed, in order to avoid unnecessary air turbulence and increase the vehicle’s range.
INTERIOR
The cabin of the i3 and i3s is quite unlike that of any other car on the market. There is no transmission tunnel to get in the way, and many of the materials used throughout are enticingly unconventional: the top of the dashboard is fashioned from recycled plastic, for instance, and olive leaves are used to tan the leather upholstery. Sustainability is the defining characteristic here, which is entirely fitting and only makes the car seem a more authentic product. Relocate to the back seats, though, and this same sense of spaciousness isn’t as prevalent. Visibility is good back there but leg room is tight even by supermini standards and the rear-hinged coach-style rear side doors – which are interlocked with those at the front – can make accessing the back seats a more elaborate process than it really needs to be, particularly in a narrow, perpendicular bay. It also pays to remember that the i3 and i3s are strict four-seaters.
ALWAYS CONNECTED
The BMW i3 and BMW i3s come with all the technology you would expect from a BMW. Driver assistance systems such as Park Assist (not available on the BMW i3s), Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go function and Traffic Jam Assist help to make every journey as seamless as possible. And with BMW Connected+ you can send route guidance to your car, share live trip status via SMS and control the climate in the car before you leave the house.
